On a phone call a couple of weeks ago, Matt Harwood from Security Management Magazine proposed an interesting conundrum. If my software protects websites from having data scraped (and then exfiltrated) from them, isn't that both a good and a bad thing?

Matt's example was the case where there is information that should be public but is being protected for the wrong reasons.

This definitely got me thinking about the ramifications of our software. My goal has always been to add integrity to the internet, but if my software keeps the good guys from getting to information that is being inappropriately hidden, that's a catch-22, right?

I'm definitely not advocating people exposing everything they think the public needs to know. The answer is likely that the owners of the website should have the ability to decide what goes out and what doesn't, but I think this is an interesting question to ponder.
